Re: Absentee Voter Application

Dear Voter:

The  Absentee Voter Application for the upcoming election is  a little different from previous elections.  It is a  Presidential Primary/School District Election where each voter has to choose either a Republican Ballot,  Democratic Ballot or a No Declaration/Proposal Ballot in order for the voter to receive a ballot.    Please click on the links above for the ballot samples.

Please return your application after you have filled in all of the "pink" highlighted sections of the application and select a party if you wish to vote in this election

If you should have any questions or need assistance, please contact the
Clerk's Office at (734)281-4239.

The City Clerk maintains the voter registration file and acts as election officer in conducting all elections, complying with Federal, State and local laws.  The City Clerk performs other activities prescribed by law including administration of oaths of office.

                                           ELECTIONS

ABSENTEE VOTER BALLOTS can be obtained by contacting the City Clerk's office.   Make your request early to allow for postal delivery.  The Clerk's office is open the Saturday prior to all elections from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to accommodate your needs.  Click here for the State of Michigan Absentee Voter Information

PHOTO IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED for all persons voting or attempting to vote in all future elections.  The Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the 1996 law requiring voters to present acceptable photo identification when voting is constitutional and enforceable.  A driver's license or any of the following are acceptable: state-issued personal identification, driver's license or personal identification card issued by another state, federal or state government-issued photo identification, U.S. passport, current student identification with photo - from a high school or an accredited institution of higher education, military identification card with photo, or tribal identification card with photo.  If you do not have any of the foregoing, you may sign an affidavit prior to voting.

OPTICAL SCAN VOTING EQUIPMENT:  Gone are the days of the old mechanical lever machines that were used for so many years!  Optical scan voting equipment is now utilized as a result of the Help America Vote Act.  Wayne County will employ the M-100 voting machines supplied by Election  Systems & Software.

Voters will be directed to a voting station to mark their ballot and will then insert their own ballot into the voting machine tabulator.  The optical scan equipment will accept the ballot and it is dropped into a locked bin.  The optical scan equipment can detect an error in voting, such as an overvote.  Should this happen, the voter will be offered a new ballot to complete.  The new equipment allows for a much smoother election and a much faster tally at the end of the night.

ELECTION EQUIPMENT TO AID DISABLED VOTERS:  Each polling place is equipped with a voting device specifically designed to give disabled voters the option to vote privately and independently in the precinct. This device, called the AutoMARK Voter-Assist Terminal, is in addition to the optical scan devices that we have become accustomed to.

The AutoMARK device allows disabled voters for whom marking a ballot in the usual way would be difficult or impossible, to mark a ballot with the touch of a screen, a touch pad, or a sip/puff tube. There are a number of ways these devices can be operated, including using headphones and a Braille keypad. The AutoMARK will then mark the ballot for the voter and the voter will insert the ballot into the M100 Tabulator.

While technology aids the disabled in marking a ballot, this device may be used by any voter at the precincts.

If you have any questions, or would like to see a demonstration, contact the City Clerk.

ELECTION WORKERS:  Applications are being accepted to work at the polls in upcoming federal, state, city and school board elections.  Qualifications are you must be at least 18 year of age, a U.S. citizen and a registered voter.  Contact the Clerk's office to obtain an application.  Election Inspector Application
