The Community Development Department is the principal advisor to the City Manager, City Council, Planning Commission, Economic Development Authority, Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, Citizens Community Development Advisory Committee and Riverview Vision on all municipal functions related to:

• zoning
• land use
• economic development
• capital improvement planning
• strategic planning
• urban development

The Community Development Department serves as staff to the Planning Commission for the formulation of the long range Master Plan of Future Land Use and the coordination of public and private developments with the goals and policies of this Plan.

The Community Development Department serves as the City's chief research and data collection agent, providing information on the current status of the City and future trends to its citizens, developers, other City departments and other governmental agencies.

The Community Development Department processes all requests for:

• zoning reclassifications
• special use permits
• land subdivisions
• planned unit developments
• parcel splits and combinations
• site plans

The department assists other departments in preparing applications for various state and federal grants in the areas of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), general planning, recreation, community development, public safety, brownfield redevelopment and other areas.
