In February of 2009, you will no longer be able to watch TV, unless you go digital.
With digital television, you can count on pictures to be sharper, colors deeper and "ghosts" and interference are eliminated.
Michigan citizens who rely on over-the-air television signals will need to take one of three steps before Feb. 17, 2009 to continue to be able to view local television stations.
These steps are:
1. Purchase a new television with a digital tuner and connect it to an existing (or new) antenna.
2. Purchase a digital-to-analog converter and use it to connect an existing analog television with an antenna.
3. Subscribe to a cable or satellite service, where feasible.
Consumers who rely on antennas (including outside antennas and "rabbit ears") to receive broadcast signals on TV sets having only analog tuners will need to obtain separate digital-to-analog set-top converter boxes to watch over-the-air TV. These boxes receive digital signals and convert them into analog format for display on analog TVs. Analog sets connected to such converter boxes will display digital broadcasts, but not necessarily in the full, original digital quality.
Between Jan. 1, 2008, and March 31, 2009, all U.S. households will be eligible to request up to two coupons, worth $40 each, to be used toward the purchase of up to two, digital-to-analog converter boxes. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has responsibility for administering the coupon program.
