Interested Becoming a Foster Parent?




Help Children and Families in Your Community! 
Informational Session to become a Foster Parent or Community Volunteer
June 15, 2009 1-4 PM or July 15, 2009 9AM-12 PM at The Guidance Center in Southgate

The Foster Care Recruitment subcommittee will meet at 3:30, following the large group meeting.

1.  Birth Parent Support Group for Parents involved in the Protective Services or Foster Care System.  Collaboration between The Guidance Center and Judson Center, 1st Thursdays of the month. See attached flyer for more details.

2. Teen Parents Group for parents who are teenagers. In Southgate and River Rouge through The Guidance Center. See attached flyer for more details.

3. Foster Parent Support Group on the 3rd Thursday of the month at The Guidance Center.  See attached flyer for more details.

4. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Group, also open to Relative Providers, 4th Thursday of the month at The Guidance Center, in collaboration with Adult Well-Being Services.  See attached flyer for more details.

5. Foster Parent Orientation for potential foster parents or community volunteers. Two dates-June 15th and July 15th--at The Guidance Center.  See attached flyer for more details.

6. Free 5 week Love and Logic Parenting Classes at The Guidance Center starting June 8th. See attached flyer for more details.

7.  Free Parenting Classes (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting, STEP, at The Guidance Center.  See attached flyer for more details.

8. The Neighborhood City Halls have free Detroit Zoo tickets for low income families.  The individuals must go to the City Hall in their neighborhood and show, I.D. and medicaid card and or bridge card.  For more information they may call the neighborhood city halls @ 313-224-3450 to find out which City Hall location is nearest to them.


9.  Walter White Community Resource Center in River Rouge in an effort to promote all of the services TGC provides at that location. It will be a carnival theme with games, prizes, food, a moon bounce, sports, and other activities.  It is completely free to the community.  Attached is the flyer.  Please pass this along to anyone who you may think would be interested in attending.  This is also a perfect opportunity for all staff to come out and bring your families. 

10. Save Our Children Coalition at The University of Michigan-Dearborn, School of Education in collaboration with CAUSE presents...The ABCs of Education in Foster Care: Advocacy, Behavior & Collaborationwith Keynote Speaker John Seita, Ed.D on Saturday, June 6, 2009 from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM at University of Michigan-Dearborn.University of Michigan-DearbornFairlane Center North19000 Hubbard Dr.Dearborn, MI 48126Who can benefit from this conference?Foster youth and parents, educators, human service, legal and mental health professionals, policy makers, community volunteers and advocates will develop knowledge and skills to maximize the benefits of education forchildren/youth in foster care.
