Snow Emergency Info

Whenever there is an accumulation of snow and/or ice upon the streets of this city in an amount of five inches or more or when, in the opinion of the city manager or his designee, the accumulation or conditions constitutes a danger to the public or interferes with the free flow of traffic or interferes with the public safety units operations, the city manager or his designee, may declare that a snow emergency exists.
Residents will be notified a snow emergency has been declared by:
  • Orange snow emergency placards on the side of DPW trucks.
  • Yellow placards at Longsdorf and Fort, Williamsburg and Fort, Valleyview and Sibley, Stonewood and Sibley, Sibley at westerly city limits, Quarry and Pennsylvania, Quarry and Sibley, Pennsylvania at westerly city limits.
  • By announcements on the city information cable channels- 10 (WOW) or 12 (Comcast).Residents can also call the SNOW EMERGENCY phone at: (734) 281-2584 to check if the snow emergency status. 

All vehicles left on the roadway one hour after a snow emergency has been enacted will be towed at owners’ expense and a violation will be issued.
As officers prepare to remove vehicles from a street, a sticker will be placed on all vehicles to be towed. If the vehicle is removed before the officer begins to tow it, residents may avoid paying for a ticket and a tow bill.
No vehicle will be allowed to park on the street during a declared snow emergency. THIS INCLUDES STREETS THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN PLOWED.
The following streets are exceptions and parking is permitted, but only in the manner that follows:

  • Residents who live on Brinson between Pennsylvania and Longsdorf are permitted to park on the West Side of the street during a declared snow emergency.
  • Residents who live on Matthews between Parkway and Longsdorf are permitted to park on the West Side of the street during a declared snow emergency.
  • Residents who live on Valade between Pennsylvania and Longsdorf are permitted to park on the West Side of the street during a declared snow emergency.
  • Residents who live on Grant between Krause and Electric are permitted to park on the South Side of the street during a declared snow emergency.
  • Residents who live on Garfield between Krause and Electric are permitted to park on the North Side of the street during a declared snow emergency.
  • Residents who live on Riverview St. between Ford Ave. and Sibley are permitted to park on the East Side of the street during a declared snow emergency.

The penalty for parking on a city street during a snow emergency is a fine of $75.00 plus court costs, towing charges and storage fees.

IT IS A VIOLATION OF CITY ORDINANCE #46-105 FOR ANY RESIDENT TO SHOVEL SNOW INTO THE STREET. The penalty for shoveling into the street is a misdemeanor.
Residents Should not Shovel or Snow Blow snow from their Sidewalks or Driveways into the Street. City Ordinance #38-5 Prohibits the Shoveling or Placing of Snow from Private Property onto a Public Street or Right of Way. Residents can be issued a Violation with a Fine of $50.00
   Residents and Business Owners are Responsible for Shoveling and Clearing Their Sidewalks. Ordinance #54-8 Requires that All Snow and Ice be cleared within 24 Hours After the Snow or Ice has Fallen or Accumulated. Property Owners can be issued a Violation with a Fine of $50.00
